Discover the fascinating region of La Axarquia in this half day tour. This area to the east of Malaga, sandwiched between the mountains and the sea still the preserves the essence of Andalusia. We』ll visit fascinating Frigiliana and Nerja with its stunning prehistoric cave system.
First stop is Frigiliana, a typical whitewashed village dating back to the times of the Moors. You』ll have time to explore the steep cobbled alleyways of the old town winding past gleaming white houses resplendent with flowers. Visit the ancient Moorish castle, now converted into a molasses factory and snap some bargains in some of the many craft shops. The town is famous for its colourful ceramics, sub-tropical fruit and vegetables and sweet Malaga wine.
Next stop is Nerja, a lively town with a long history dating back to Roman times. Under the Moors the town was known as Narixa and it was famed throughout the Islamic world for its fine silks. We』ll go on a sightseeing tour of all the top sights and attractions, including the Roman aqueduct and the Balcon de Europa, a viewpoint with stunning views out to sea. You』ll also have plenty of time to stroll around the old town packed with bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.
You also have the option of visiting the Caves of Nerja. This impressive cavern system, which was only discovered in 1959, is believed to be one of the largest systems of its kind in the world. Marvel at the incredible stalactite and stalagmite formations and wander through the series of underground chambers with such evocative names as the Hall of the Tusk and the Hall of the Phantom.
